The Role Model
Adored by many, the Role Model is exemplary in a myriad of ways. She promotes the importance of social-emotional well-being and is revered for her ability to balance her mind, body, and soul. Known for having a strong sense of self, she leads by example and sets positive societal standards. Her nonconforming attitude, values, and behavior engenders admiration.
It was truly love at first sight, she saw him at the grocery store but he barely noticed her. The image of his face was burned into her memory for almost a year before she saw him again. It was high school freshman orientation and there he was, blue jeans, a crisp white t-shirt, and fresh white sneakers. Her cheeks flushed immediately and she couldn’t get that kool-aid smile off of her face.
Junior year she caught his attention and they dated for their remaining high school years. The Summer after graduation – against all advice- they got married in a small backyard ceremony. In the Fall, she enrolled in community college and he went to trade school. Shortly after, she got pregnant with their first child, a daughter named Sara. A couple of days after delivery, she returned to school to finish out the semester. Her husband received his certificate in general construction, so he worked while she focused on her studies.
Life was sweet until it soured. One morning, -just days after their second-year anniversary- her husband turned to her and said he was leaving. She sat in complete disbelief as he walked out the door. The responsibility of marriage and parenthood made him realize that he hadn’t experienced life and he needed to find himself. Now, a single parent, she needed to find work. She was hired at her daughter’s school as a Food Service Assistant and was now taking classes part-time. Her life had changed so much in just a few short months but she refused to give up on her dreams and more importantly, herself.
College was going well but she had yet to declare a major. Work was also going well. After she obtained her Associates degree, she applied for a classroom Instructional Aide position. Working with the children everyday inspired her. She transferred her credits to the local university and was accepted into their School of Education program. She was a good student but an excellent mother. Despite her hardships -and there were many- she never lost sight of the two little eyes looking up at her and her behavior was a reflection of that.
