Characterized as masterful, open-minded, and mindful, the M.O.M is said to have great inner strength. Her ability to live in the moment despite her past or the unknown of the future evokes reverence amongst her peers. With a compassionate heart and sincere humility, she endeavors to make the world more harmonious.
She grew up in a family full of Certified Public Accountants, so it was no surprise that she had become fond of tax law. It was the perfect opportunity to marry her interest of law and tax accounting. She applied to several universities in the District of Columbia and was accepted to Madison U. The idea of being in the city that created, interpreted and enforced the nation’s laws had massive appeal. After graduating with her Juris Doctor (JD) degree, she enrolled into the Masters of Laws Program (LL.M) for a more in-depth understanding of tax law.
During her sophomore year, she did an externship with the U.S. Government’s Department of Treasury. She worked on a team that oversaw cross-border taxation and tax policy. During her three months at the Office of International Tax Counsel she noticed that most of the lawyers she worked with had their LL.M which is why she thought it would be a good idea to obtain hers. Upon graduation, she landed a job with the same department she interned for. For the past six years, she negotiated tax treaties with foreign sovereigns, and helped with international tax legislative developments. She did great work on behalf of her country and she was very proud of that but she no longer had a passion for it.
A few months later she posted a beautiful picture on Facebook of a hilltop city overlooking this expansive light blue beach. Her caption read, “Portugal awaits.” All 63 comments shared the same reactions, wide eyed emoji’s and questions like what, when, for how long etc. She replied only once stating that she had given up law in search of something more meaningful. Turns out she signed up for a Teaching Abroad program that required her to teach English in Portugal for six months. No one seemed surprised, just curious as to what prompted this major change. She was never one to seek validation from other people and she exemplified what it meant to live in the moment. She seemed to love her work but truth be told, she worked long hours, had no time for dating, and started to feel trapped in the political sphere; so, she decided to throw caution to the wind in search of her next adventure.
After being immersed in the Portuguese culture, she had a newfound respect and appreciation for life, people, and the beauty that surrounded her. When she returned stateside, she started a photography project that captured the true essence of everyday people. One day she rented out a space for a pop-up gallery and adorned the walls with the stunning collection of images that she took from around the city. On display were all the beautiful people that she had met -from all walks of life- and their personal stories. It was a lovely work of art that embodied the unique differences and overarching similarities of the human spirit. With rave reviews, she was commissioned to work on a secret project for a global initiative that has the potential to positively impact 10 million people.
